The Chair of the Conservative Party Human Rights Commission, Fiona Bruce MP, signed a cross-party letter to the Foreign Secretary today following the decision by the Chinese Foreign Ministry to expel US citizens working as journalists for the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and the Washington Post from mainland China, Macau and Hong Kong.

She joined the former Governor of Hong Kong Lord Patten of Barnes, the independent Crossbench Peer Lord Alton of Liverpool, the Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Hong Kong Alistair Carmichael MP (Liberal Democrat), the Shadow Sports Minister Catherine West MP (Labour) and barrister Sir Geoffrey Nice QC in calling on the Foreign Secretary to “speak out in the clearest and most robust terms against this outrageous decision” which, given its implications for Hong Kong, amounts to “a severe violation of Hong Kong’s Basic Law and the Sino-British Joint Declaration”
